The Great Barrier Reef is hands down, the most beautiful place i’ve ever been and seen. I’m certainly no expert on it, just a massive fan, and recently I was surprised to hear that many people, mainly outside of Australia, aren’t aware of the current environmental and political issues affecting our Great Barrier Reef.
I was on the southern tip of the reef only a few weeks ago and to my delight I saw almost no coral bleaching and seemingly quite a healthy ecosystem. @sallymustang and I swam with hundreds of different species of beautiful fish, rays, dolphins and sea turtles.
At one point we were cruising about five metres below the surface together, side by side, and as we came up and over a big chunk of reef and down the back of it, we saw this turtle just resting there. We kept swimming towards it and I assumed it would take off before we got to close, but as we got closer it super casually just drifted off and then at the same time Sally and I reached out and rubbed its shell gently before it swam away. It was one of the most beautiful moments that Sal and I have had together and we have the reef to thank for that, along with many other unique and amazing experiences.
I’ve created a few artworks now to try and raise awareness for the reef and this is no different - You can keep up to date with active conservation efforts for the reef and find how how you can support those with these guys @protectthereefoffical
This artwork was inspired by the reef and it’s inhabitants. The shallow and deep blues accompanied by streaks of incredible colour and contrast.
